Born in South Shields, he saw active service in World War 2 as an RAF bomb aimer in the Far East.
After the war, he decided upon a show business career and appeared as a comedian in BBC New to You talent show.
On the strength of this, he toured as a comic in Variety and became a household name in the T.V. situation comedy show Joan and Leslie from 1955-58 (appearing with his 1st. wife). They also fronted a long running series of commercials for Fairy Snow.
Moving to California in the mid 1960s, he forged a new career as a ?typical Englishman? in T.V. programmes such as The Monkees and I Dream of Jeannie, but not wishing to be typecast, he moved again, this time to Australia where he became Head of Programme Development for Channel 7.
Returning to the UK in 1970, he toured in plays and panto as an actor and wrote for several big stars of the day, including Kenneth Williams, June Whitfield and Warren Mitchell.
Later T.V. appearances included Emmerdale and Casualty. There were also film roles for him in Mystery Submarine (1963), Billy Liar (1964), Goal (2005) and Goal 2 (2007), plus his final one in Last Chance Harvey (2008)
His second wife, Brenda, died in 2012 and he is survived by two children from his first marriage (David and Susan).
