BIOGRAPHY
Gerard Kenny was born on 8 July 1947 in New York City into a deeply musical family. He formed his first band in high school and after several years on the US club circuit, he moved to London in 1977. It was there that his songwriting career took off.
His breakthrough came in 1978 with the single New York, New York (So Good They Named It Twice). The song spent two months in the UK Singles Chart and helped his album Made It Through the Rain reach the UK top 20. He followed that success with Fantasy in 1980 and the theme tune I Could Be So Good for You for TV’s Minder. That song won him the Ivor Novello Award for Best Television Theme Music.
Gerard’s music has also gained international reach. Getting to Know Each Other became a radio hit in the Philippines and was later covered by artists like Ariel Rivera, Billy Crawford and Sharon Cuneta. His work has also been recorded by Barry Manilow, Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, Jack Jones, Shirley Bassey and others.
Beyond his songwriting and performing, Gerard served as musical director for Spike Milligan & Friends, a show he helped bring from the West End to Australia. He also co-wrote with lyricist Lynsey de Paul songs such as There’s No Place Like London.
In recognition of his contribution to entertainment and variety, Gerard was initiated into the Grand Order of Water Rats in 2025 as Water Rat No. 867.
Gerard Kenny’s career bridges the worlds of pop songcraft, television themes and musical direction. From chart success to theatrical composition, his work continues to resonate across generations.
