Frank Bruno MBE is one of Britain’s most beloved sporting legends, whose courage inside the boxing ring was matched only by his openness and resilience outside of it. Known for his formidable strength, infectious laugh, and immense heart, Frank’s life has spanned world championships, stage appearances, and tireless advocacy for mental health.
Born in London in 1961, Frank rose through the amateur boxing ranks with a string of knockouts that marked him as a future star. As a professional, he quickly became a fan favourite, known for his devastating right hand and his good-natured personality. In 1995, after several near-misses, he achieved his lifelong dream by winning the WBC Heavyweight Championship of the World at Wembley Stadium in front of thousands of roaring fans. It was a defining moment in British sporting history and secured his place as a national hero.
Following his boxing career, Frank brought his charisma and charm into the entertainment world. He became a popular television personality, making memorable appearances on talk shows, pantomimes, game shows and charity events. His natural humour and likeability made him a welcome presence in homes across the UK. Whether sparring in the ring or sharing a joke on stage, Frank's ability to lift spirits remained constant.
Beyond sport and entertainment, Frank has become a leading voice in the conversation around mental health. After publicly sharing his struggles, he established The Frank Bruno Foundation, which provides non-contact boxing sessions and support for those dealing with mental ill health. His openness has helped break down stigma and inspired thousands to speak up and seek help.
Frank was awarded an MBE for services to boxing and charity, and his commitment to giving back has continued to this day. As a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats, Frank brings his trademark warmth, humility and humour to a brotherhood founded on charity and camaraderie. He embodies the best of the Order’s spirit, resilience, generosity, and dedication to lifting others through laughter and support.
From the boxing ring to the stage, and from community halls to royal audiences, Frank Bruno remains a symbol of strength, kindness and joy. He is more than a champion; he is a true Water Rat.
