
BIOGRAPHY
Derek Martin, born Derek William Rapp on 11 April 1933 in Bow, East London, began his career in entertainment as a stuntman, working on classic shows including Doctor Who. After sustaining a serious collarbone injury while filming Elizabeth R in 1971, he transitioned into acting full-time.
Over the following decades, Derek became a familiar face on British television, appearing in shows such as Z-Cars, Softly Softly, The Sweeney, Minder, Bergerac and The Bill. His film credits include Ragtime, Spaghetti House and Boston Kickout, where he brought a grounded authenticity to every role.
In 2000, Derek took on the role that would make him a household name — Charlie Slater in EastEnders. As the solid and dependable head of the Slater family, he quickly became one of the soap’s most beloved characters. He played the role from 2000 to 2011, returning again in 2013 and 2016 for key storylines.
He also made appearances on reality and comedy television, including Celebrity Coach Trip and a guest spot on Harry Hill’s Tea Time, showing his lighter side and willingness to laugh along with the audience.
Derek was honoured with membership in the Grand Order of Water Rats as Water Rat No. 845, a recognition of his long-standing contribution to British entertainment and his charitable spirit. Known for his warmth, humility and professionalism, Derek is admired by colleagues and loved by audiences.
