BIOGRAPHY
Billy Pearce is one of Britain’s most endearing and enduring comedians. Born in Leeds on 1 February 1951, he grew up surrounded by entertainment. His father was a pianist, and his mother ran a well-known Yorkshire dance school. From a young age, Billy showed a love for performance, appearing in ballet and amateur stage roles, but a serious motorbike accident in his teens changed his path and pushed him towards a full-time career in entertainment.
His first steps into show business came as a Butlins Redcoat in the early 1970s, where he quickly found his voice and honed his style. In 1972 he appeared on Opportunity Knocks as part of the musical act the Stewart Brothers. His big break came in 1986 on New Faces, where he reached the final as a solo comedian and caught the attention of the industry.
From that moment on, Billy became a fixture on British television and theatre. He fronted The Billy Pearce Laughter Show, made appearances on Des O’Connor Tonight, Blankety Blank, Tonight at the London Palladium, and even took on stage roles in The Rocky Horror Show. He also became a pantomime legend, especially at the Bradford Alhambra, where he repeatedly broke box office records and became a favourite with families across generations.
Billy’s work has earned him multiple accolades. He was voted Club Mirror's Solo Comedian of the Year in 1988, and in 1994, he won the British Comedy Award for Top Theatre Variety Performer, beating out the likes of Ken Dodd and Michael Barrymore. That same year, he was presented with the Sir James Carreras Outstanding New Talent Award.
Offstage, Billy has quietly supported numerous charities. He has been a Patron of the Yorkshire Children’s Trust since 2012 and, more recently, became Patron of WF3 Kindness, a community organisation supporting families in South Leeds and North Kirklees.
Within the Grand Order of Water Rats, Billy Pearce holds the title of Water Rat No. 798. He is celebrated not only for his showmanship but for his kindness, humility and commitment to giving back. His energy, warmth and genuine love for live entertainment make him a treasured member of the Order.
Billy Pearce continues to light up stages across the country. With decades of laughter behind him and plenty more still to come, he remains a true gentleman of variety and one of Britain's best-loved entertainers.
