BIOGRAPHY

Billy Murray is a well-known face in British television, with a career that has spanned over six decades. A proud member of the Grand Order of Water Rats, he holds the title of Water Rat No. 859, a mark of both his long-standing contribution to entertainment and his support of charitable work within the industry.

Born in Forest Gate, Essex, in 1941, Billy found early roles in iconic shows such as Z-Cars, Softly Softly, The Sweeney, Minder, and Bergerac, quickly building a reputation for strong, grounded performances. His breakthrough came with the role of DS Don Beech in The Bill, a part he played from 1995 to 2004, becoming one of the show's most memorable and complex characters.

Following that, Billy took on the role of Johnny Allen in EastEnders, bringing menace and charisma to Albert Square from 2005 to 2006. His work in film includes titles such as McVicar, Rise of the Footsoldier, Essex Boys and Rollin’ with the Nines, showcasing his ability to move between television drama and hard-edged cinema with ease.

Alongside his acting career, Billy has remained a steady presence in the world of variety and live entertainment. Within the Water Rats, he is known not just for his screen credits but for his warmth, support and genuine commitment to the Order's values of friendship and charity.
