BIOGRAPHY

Bernie Clifton is a true icon of British variety, known for his unique blend of surreal comedy, musical talent and pure heart. With a career spanning over five decades, Bernie has brought joy to generations with his unforgettable performances, often involving his equally famous sidekick, the ostrich named Oswald.

Born in St. Helens, Lancashire, Bernie’s journey into show business began with a love for music. A talented trombonist, he was originally part of a dance band before discovering his gift for comedy. It wasn’t long before he found himself on television screens across the country, becoming a staple of light entertainment in the 1970s and 80s. With appearances on shows like
Crackerjack, The Good Old Days, and The Royal Variety Performance, Bernie quickly became one of Britain’s most recognisable and beloved entertainers.

His act, a charming mixture of visual gags, musical numbers and off-the-wall antics, was always family-friendly and instantly memorable. The sight of Bernie riding across a stage on his trademark ostrich costume became part of British comedy folklore, earning laughs from audiences of all ages and making him a firm favourite on stage and screen.

But Bernie is more than just the man with the ostrich. A skilled musician, he’s performed everything from classical trombone solos to heartfelt ballads. His versatility has allowed him to move effortlessly between cabaret, concert halls and pantomime, where he continues to delight audiences with his warmth and wit.

In 2016, Bernie experienced an unexpected resurgence when he appeared as a contestant on
The Voice UK, charming the judges and public alike with his sincerity and showbiz sparkle. It was a reminder that his appeal remains as strong today as ever.

A proud member of the Grand Order of Water Rats, Bernie Clifton represents everything the Order stands for—laughter, generosity, and dedication to the craft of entertainment. His contributions to charity and the performing arts have earned him deep respect from his peers, and his ongoing presence within the Order is a source of inspiration and joy.
