John Clive

Born 6th January 1936 in London, John Clive was raised in Liverpool. As a child actor he played the title role in Rattigan's 'The Winslow Boy' before National Service in the RAF.

He then won the Photoplay National Talent Competition as a stand-up comedian. Engaged for a season at Butlin's Filey this led on to further variety dates.

With the decline of variety, he turned to comedy character acting, mainly on television supporting legendary Water Rats such as Tommy Cooper, Dick Emery and Harry Secombe. He became a familiar face in shows such as 'Rising Damp' and many other popular situation comedy programmes.

His many film roles include his memorable performances in 'The Italian Job', 'Carry on Abroad' and Stanley Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange'.

Also acclaimed as a straight actor in plays such as 'Under Milk Wood' and 'The Real Inspector Hound', and T.V. productions including 'How Green Was My Valley' and 'The History of Mr. Polly'.

In addition, he was the best selling author of novels 'The Last Liberator', 'Barossa' and 'Broken Wings'.

John had been living in Spain for many years but had moved back to England, settling in Preston, Lancashire where he died on 14th October 2012.

He leaves two sons and a daughter.
